Varanasi - The Holy City Of India
Varanasi is a religious center in North India. It is regarded as a holy city by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and probably the oldest in India. Incineration of the deceased breaks the circle of reincarnation that's why cadavers are burnt on the banks of the Ganges river near Varanasi 24 hours a day.
Ashes left are dispersed in the river. Sacred ablutions and clothes washing are performed nearby. Dogs are running around trying to find unburnt pieces of flesh. Happy children are flying a kite. Boatmen are eager to offer a journey across the sacred river.
